I was asked tonight if I had heard about the allegations made against the Aggie Football team of Texas A&M University and their head coach, Jimbo Fisher, I had not.
In fact, that question was the first I had heard of it.
The questioner then posted to me a link to an NBC Sports article.
Titled:
“Jimbo Fisher doesn't 'know anything about' report alleging NCAA violations, injury mishandling” written by John Taylor.
The first line of the article made me question if the piece was even serious:
“Not surprisingly, Sgt. Schultz showed up at the podium in College Station Tuesday night.”
I soldiered on and read the piece.
Now I do have doubts.
Follow up:
Full disclosure, I am not an Aggie, nor did I attend any SEC affiliate school.
The basis for the allegations and the article and what is sure to be more news stories is an allegation made by a departing player. Santino Marchiol, who has transferred to Arizona is the reported source of the allegations. The platform for the allegations is a waiver application made to the NCAA to allow him to play for Arizona this season.
When I was young I got some sage advice about rumors, reports and gossip; when you are told something, you must question why you are being told this, by this person. What gain is in it for them to tell you?
So I question. The allegations of impropriety are made in a waiver application. Why is a waiver necessary? Could the waiver be granted if there was no impropriety in the departed schools program? Is this waiver the sole source of allegations? Has any thing been substantiated?
If the allegations of impropriety are the only way this athlete can play at the acquiring school that is a big red flag.
The article writer seems to infer that Jimbo Fisher and his staff have access to the incoming fax machine at the NCAA Waiver Office. He makes a very flippant remark when Coach Fisher says he did not know about the accusation.
Do you know every accusation every made about you? When it was made?
There has been an accusation made, and it must be investigated, openly and honestly.
If the allegations prove to be false then there must be consequences to the athlete for leveling unfounded charges.
If they prove to be true then of course, there must be consequences and penalties for the rules violations. Life is choice and consequences of those choices.
Then there is this little tidbit, buried at the bottom of the page, well away from the headline and Sgt. Schultz comment:
A&M lured Fisher away from Florida State late last year with a 10-year, $75 million contract. Fisher replaced Kevin Sumlin, who was fired as A&M’s head coach in November of last year and now holds the same job at… Arizona.
After reading that part, I have to take a pause, I will wait for details before jumping to any conclusions.
Like I said, Why did this person say what they did? What gain is there for them to tell you?
The story and the allegations seem very convenient and somewhat fishy to me, but I will keep an open mind while the resulting investigation takes place and we have facts, not allegations.
